Emmy winners 2010: Opening number just beats George Clooney in bed with 'Modern Family' cast

He may not be an old hand at sex scenes but George Clooney appeared at home in bed during the Emmy Awards.
Guest starring in a sketch alongside the cast of "Modern Family," George Clooney played Phil's brother, whom every member of the cast appeared to fall for after Phil died.
When Julie Bowen and Sofa Vergara both finished cooing over "The American" star in one scene, gay couple Cameron and Mitchell -- both of whom have come under fire for not even sharing a kiss during the series -- appeared in bed with Clooney
"Did we plan on falling in love with Phil's brother?" Jesse Tyler Ferguson asked.
"You don't plan these things," Eric Stonestreet replied, before playing with Clooney's hand.
Meanwhile, the 49-year-old Hollywood star acted as though he was becoming more and more uncomfortable with the small screen scene.
"I gotta get a film," he quipped.
The sketch aired days after Clooney's "American" co-star, Violante Placido, with whom he reportedly shares a graphic love scene, revealed the smoldering star is wary of sex on screen.
"He confessed … that he didn't do lots of sex scenes," she told People.com. "I felt like this was in a way something new to him, he wasn't that experienced."
But sex scenes are not the only thing that makes Clooney blush. The actor looked painfully shy when he received a standing ovation Sunday night after receiving the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.
"Don't do that because then I feel like maybe I'm sick and I don't know it," he told the audience.
Clooney won the award for his work in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and in Darfur following the genocide.
"It's embarrassing,” he told FoxNews.com back stage. “You don't want to be awarded for doing what you're supposed to be doing."

About Last Night: UFC 118 Edition

Winner and STILL Champion

Frankie Edgar walked into Boston as the UFC lightweight champion, and he's heading back to Jersey as the UFC lightweight champion. In his four day stay in Beantown, all Edgar did was answer every question the critics had for him in resounding fashion. There is no controversy and no room for excuses from Camp Penn; Edgar smashed "The Prodigy" for five rounds, pitching a shutout and solidifying himself as the top lightweight in the sport today. While other have angles on making the same claim, when you beat the man widely considered to be the greatest lightweight ever back-to-back, you've earned the honor in my books.

While the gameplan was similar to their first meeting, this was a super-charged version of Frankie Edgar, mixing his strikes better, adding more umph to his takedowns, and showing that he has grown defensively on the ground as well, scrambling to his feet well each time Penn took him down. From the opening bell, you could see that Edgar had a point to prove, and his did so emphatically last night.

What Now for B.J. Penn?

Joe Rogan asked the beaten former champion where he goes from here following the bout and Penn admitted that it is going to be something he needs to think long and hard about. Personally, I don't think there should be that much to think about.

Penn is an other-worldly talent who has spent his entire career believing everything positive that has been said about him, ignoring the negatives and making excuses for his shortcomings. He is surrounded by people who want to tell him how great he is and that is not a recipe for success anywhere, and definitely not inside the cage. There are two things "The Prodigy" needs to do and do quickly, before he becomes the poster child for unfulfilled promise:

(1) Move to welterweight
His weight-cut apparently didn't go all that well, and given time to properly move up in class, Penn could be a very challenging opponent for just about anyone at 170. He'd be a bit undersized, but his talents would transcend his stature.

(2) Leave Hilo and train with a real camp
Life is comfortable for Penn in his hometown, and no one who works with him in Hilo is going to push him the way he needs to be pushed. We saw it last night when his corner had nothing to offer in the championship rounds when it mattered the most. There are a number of quality gyms out there with plenty of people willing to help hone his gifts and motivate him to be the fighter he has been and could continue to be.

No More Freak Shows

Pointless. That is the only word I can use to describe James Toney's appearance inside the Octagon last night.

While it brought in the mainstream media and he made for quality entertainment leading up to the bout, when the cage door closed, what transpired was exactly what everyone of sound mind and body knew was going to go down: takedown, beating, game over. As my friend Brent said last night, "Randy shouldn't even count that as a win." Toney stood no chance and it honestly was a little embarrassing.

If I can step up onto my soapbox for a minute, this sport is wildly popular and successful without inexperience interlopers coming in and making a mockery of things. We've now seen two MMA neophytes deliver embarrassing performances on back-to-back weekends (Lashley, Toney) and it should signal to the MMA power brokers that the big name (and big money) rookies aren't the fighters they should be focusing on. Stop showcasing the highly-marketable, poorly-prepared curiosities and build the sport around the guys (and girls) who are actual mixed martial artists, not athletes looking for some fast money.

Maynard Rolls, Florian Freezes

Gray Maynard has got to be a happy, happy man right about now.

Last night, the unbeaten lightweight earned himself a shot at the title by handling Kenny Florian for three rounds. Maynard's wrestling was the difference - as always - with his smothering top game leaving Florian with no options off his back. Additionally, the two-time title contender looked like a deer in the headlights for the full fifteen minutes, prompting more questions about his performance in big fights.

Florian is 0-2 in title fights and showed the same hesitation he showed in those bouts last night. In less prominent bouts, Florian lets his hands and feet fly, aiming to finish and inflict damage, but none of that was there against Maynard. He stood in front of a guy with heavier hands and who has superior wrestling, and simply got steamrolled. In getting dominated last night, Florian lost his chance to ever contend for a title again, and will now fill a role as a 155-pound gatekeeper.

Nathan Diaz Looks Good at 170

I'm eating a little crow on this one because when Nathan Diaz moved to welterweight to start, I didn't think we would see all that much difference between the lightweight who went 1-3 in his final four fights at 155. So far, he's proved me very, very wrong.

Diaz picked apart Marcus Davis from the word go, using his length to repeated paw at "The Irish Hand Grenade" in space, making his right eye look like a softball by the time the bout was over. The brash California native finished the fight on the floor, choking Davis out and showing that beyond the cocky exterior there are impressive tools very similar to those his brother Nick utilizes inside the cage. For those that don't know, the elder Diaz is the Strikeforce welterweight champion, and riding a seven-fight winning streak.

Nathan went a little overboard in the post-fight press conference, asking for a top three contender at either lightweight or welterweight before soliciting a rematch with Gray Maynard that was immediately shot down, but he's certainly climbing the ladder at 170 and needs to stay focused on that endeavor. He's got a good name from his time on TUF (and his swagger) and should be looking at someone in the Mike Pierce / Mike Swick range next.

Here is a graph of Hurricane Earl’s projected path. The hurricane today entered into the Category 1 designation after it gained strength over the weekend. Now it is heading towards Leeward islands.

There is a hurricane watch now on the following territories: Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguill, St. Martin, St. Maaten, St. Barthelemy, Saba and St. Eustatius.

Current winds are nearing 75mph, and according to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Earl could become a major hurricane by Tuesday.

According to "The News of Today", the news was as below:

The tropics have really become active here in the last few days. Earlier this week we had the 2nd Hurricane of the season form in Hurricane Danielle, and as of the 5Pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Earl has formed. Earl is the 5th named storm of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season. Tropical Srrom Earl is packing winds of 40 miles per hour, and is headed in almost a due west direction at 16 miles per hour. As of 5Pm EST, Earl was located at 14.4°N 32.2°W.

The projected path that the National Hurricane Center thinks the tropical storm will take is one that is generally westward for the next 72 hours, and then bending slightly more to the WNW thereafter. They have Earl just North of the Leeward Islands by next Monday. They do predict that Earl will reach hurricane status sometime this coming weekend. Remember though that this far out, predictions are extremely inaccurate. Will Earl affect the United States at all, unlike Danielle? Right now it looks like it could be a possibility, however many computer models seem to think it will also curve north before striking the US.

World's worst traffic jam

A massive traffic jam in north China that stretches for dozens of miles and hit its 10-day mark on Tuesday stems from road construction in Beijing that won't be finished until the middle of next month, an official said.

Bumper-to-bumper gridlock spanning for 60 miles (100 kilometers) with vehicles moving little more than a half-mile (one kilometer) a day at one point has improved since this weekend, said Zhang Minghai, director of Zhangjiakou city's Traffic Management Bureau general office.
Some drivers have been stuck in the jam for five days, China Central Television reported Tuesday. But Zhang said he wasn't sure when the situation along the Beijing-Zhangjiakou highway would return to normal.
The traffic jam started Aug. 14 on a stretch of the highway that is frequently congested, especially after large coalfields were discovered in Inner Mongolia, Zhang said. Traffic volume has increased 40 percent every year.

NEW YORK WINS "RACE TO THE TOP" FUNDS

New York state won hundreds of millions of dollars in the Federal "Race to the Top" competition. The Education Department is expected to name the other second-round winners Tuesday afternoon.

he U.S. Department of Education confirmed Tuesday morning that New York won part of the $3.4 billion that the federal government had set aside to award states who could document that they would use the money to implement certain overhauls. Those changes include greater teacher accountability, the use of data systems and support for the growth of charter schools.
"That will just make a huge difference in the long term," said Merryl Tisch, chancellor of the New York Board of Regents. New York stands to win as much as $700 million in the contest. Ms. Tisch said New York won "pretty close" to what it had requested.
The Education Department is expected to name the other winners of the second round of its Race to the Top competition Tuesday afternoon.
Eighteen states and the District of Columbia were named finalists in July. Tennessee and Delaware were awarded $600 million in the first round of the competition in March.
Ms. Tisch said the prize money will allow the state to build a robust data system to help track student progress, transform the lowest performing schools and create a teacher evaluation and certification system that will help identify and reward top teachers, but also move weaker teachers out of the system. She said the money will also help New York come up with a statewide curriculum based on the common core standards.
New York recently acknowledged that it had for years grossly inflated the number of children proficient in math and English and adjusted its standards to better reflect true proficiency. Those new numbers show the state has a long way to go to overhaul its education system.
New York's win comes three months after a hard-fought battle in Albany to pass legislation that increased the number of charter schools in the state, and also set parameters for a teacher evaluation system that takes student test scores into account.

Hong Kong slams Manila hijack handling

Police conduct a forensic examination of the tourist bus hijacked in Manila August 23.

Hong Kong has expressed disappointment with the mismanagement of the Philippines
government over the death of eight of its nationals in a hostage drama in Manila.

Hong Kong is demanding explanations from the Philippines authorities about their indecisive

and slow handling of the shootout, BBC reported on Tuesday.

On Monday a dismissed policeman Rolando Mendoza armed with an automatic rifle seized a

bus carrying 25 tourists in the Philippines capital Manila in an effort to be reinstated. Following initial

successful negotiations and the release of nine of the hostages, the disgruntled former police officer

opened fire on his hostages. The police stormed the bus about 20 minutes later. There is speculation as

to why the police failed to enter the bus before the eight tourists were shot dead. Hong Kong officials

have issued a travel warning urging all flights to the Philippines to be cancelled. The warning also calls

on Hong Kong nationals to leave the Philippines as soon as possible. Flags are flying at half-mast in

Hong Kong to commemorate the victims as the stock exchange observed a minute's silence for the hijack

victims. The survivors of the incident were chartered to Hong Kong via two planes accompanied by

doctors and counselors. The Philippines President Benigno Aquino has admitted that there were

deficiencies in the operation, promising a "thorough investigation" into the incident.

Tiger Woods' divorce finalized

The divorce of golfer Tiger Woods and wife Elin Nordegren was finalized Monday, according to a                                      joint statement issued by their attorneys.

The marriage's end comes nine months after allegations surfaced that Woods carried on several extramarital affairs.

"We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future," the statement said. "While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us."

The judgment, issued Monday in Bay County, Florida, Circuit Court, allows for "shared parenting of their two children," their attorneys said in a statement. The estranged couple asked for privacy as they "adjust to a new family situation."

In the dissolution of marriage petition filed Monday, Nordegren cites the marriage as "irretrievably broken" as the reason for divorce.

According to the document, the couple reached a settlement agreement July 3 in which they agreed to a joint parenting plan.

Both Woods and Nordegren agreed to waive the 20-day delay period offered in Florida before a final judgment.

"The parties have been separated for a substantial period of time ... and the delay would generate unnecessary public attention," according to the waivers.

The couple were married October 5, 2004.

Allegations of infidelity first began to surface in November when Woods crashed his Cadillac Escalade
into a fire hydrant and tree outside his family's home in Orlando.

The November 27 incident, which left him with a sore neck and a cut on his lip that required five stitches to close, also set in motion the crash of his storybook life.

A few days beforehand, the National Enquirer had reported he was having an affair with a New York nightclub hostess, who denied it. But that allegation was followed by others, and Woods' tightly controlled world and image soon began to crumble.

Just after Christmas he entered a rehabilitation center, where he stayed for 45 days getting treatment for undisclosed "issues."

"It was to take a hard look at myself, and I did, and I've come out better," he said in April when he made his return to the PGA tour.

Woods also has acknowledged that he engaged in multiple extramarital affairs over the course of his nearly six-year marriage.

Jenna Dewan Tatum for PETA

Actor, dancer, and producer Jenna Dewan Tatum is baring her skin to save the skins of exotic animals. Covered in snakelike bodypaint, Jenna is calling attention to the millions of snakes, lizards, alligators, crocodiles, and other reptiles who are killed for their skins—and then turned into accessories. Many of these animals are still alive as the skin is ripped off their bodies.
Snakes who are killed to make wallets, belts, and other accessories have their bodies cut open from one end to the other and their skin ripped off. They are tossed aside and struggle and writhe in pain for hours or even days until they die. The majority of alligators used to make purses and shoes are raised in crowded, fetid tanks filled with feces and urine. These animals are stabbed, beaten, or clubbed until they stop moving.
Jenna tells PETA in her exclusive interview, "I couldn't believe that that is what happens for a wallet or a purse."

Diego Luna promotes safe sex for Dogs and Cats

He heated up the screen in the critically acclaimed—and sexually charged—film Y Tu Mamá También, and he’s doing it again in the newly released Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights. Mexican heartthrob Diego Luna is now touting the importance of safe sex—for dogs and cats—in a new PETA ad targeting the problem of dog and cat overpopulation by promoting spaying and neutering.

“Animals need to have safe sex, too!” Luna says in the campaign, in which he’s pictured with his canine pal, Frey. He encourages people to stop unwanted pregnancies by “fixing” their animals so that they can’t breed.

Why do Luna and PETA want everyone to spay or neuter their animals? One unspayed female cat can produce 36 cats in just one and a half years—an unneutered male can help create limitless litters of kittens. Every year, millions of unwanted dogs and cats are dumped at overcrowded animal shelters, where most are put to death. The less fortunate ones will be turned out to fend for themselves in all extremes of weather, lose battles with traffic and disease, have no constant food source, and perhaps even be stolen by laboratory dealers or used as bait by dogfighters. Simple surgery (spaying for females, neutering for males) is the solution.

“Dog and cat populations can get out of control quickly, which is why so many of them pour into local animal shelters,” says PETA’s vice president of communications, Lisa Lange. “Everyone wants to stop killing innocent dogs and cats, but the only way to make that happen is to neuter and spay.”

The ad campaign will appear in newspapers and magazines this summer and is available in both Spanish and English versions.
